A structured cabling system is simply a system of cabling and hardware that provides smooth telecommunication. With the help of only a structured cabling system, all the PCs, mobile phones, and other devices stay connected in a business. Now that a brief idea is provided about what a structured cabling system is, let’s dig deeper and see what are the components that come together and form structured cabling systems.

1. Entrance Facilities (EF)

Entrance facilities contain all the necessary cables, network demarcation points, hardware connectors, protection devices, patch panels, equipment racks, power supplies, and other miscellaneous equipment that connects them to the access provider (AP) or any private network cabling. It connects the outside and the inside building cabling.

The protection devices are for grounding, lightning, and shielding protection.

2. Equipment Room (ER)

This is the area where cabling from the outside area connects to the inside of the building wiring infrastructure. The patch panels are kept here which are responsible for providing connections for backbone cabling, horizontal cabling, and intermediate cabling. Also, network switches, PBXs, servers, and other devices are kept in the equipment room. It is important to note that equipment rooms should always be environmentally controlled. It is to make sure that the temperature and humidity level of the room is maintained as per what is provided and specified by equipment vendors.

3. Backbone Cabling

Backbone cabling is also sometimes referred to as “Riser cabling”. Backbone Cablings are typically installed in vertical channels which are known as Riser- and it connects all the floors.

Backbone cabling links the entrance facility, telecommunications room, and other equipment rooms and carrier spaces.

There are 2 subsystems defined for backbone cabling. Those are –

  • Cabling Subsystem 2: It is the cabling between a Horizontal cross-connect and an Intermediate cross-connect (IC).
  • Cabling Subsystem 3: It is the cabling between an Immediate cross-connect (IC) and the Main cross-connect (MC).

The type of cabling used in backbone cabling are the followings-

  • 100 ohms twisted-pair cabling: Cat3, Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a.
  • A multimode optical fiber cabling: 850 nanometers and laser optimized 50/125 micrometer (recommended). 62.5/125 micrometer and 50/125 micrometer (permitted).
  • Single-mode optical fiber cabling.

4. Telecommunications room (TR) and Telecommunications Enclosure (TE)

This is again an environmentally controlled area and can be a single room (TE) or be part of a larger room (TR) such as a Utility room. These rooms house the termination of horizontal and backbone cables. This is also where local cables called jumpers or patch cords are used in patch panels which helps in cross-connecting different cables. Intermediate cross-connect and main cross-connect can also be used here as additional connection resources.

5. Horizontal Cabling (Cabling subsystem 1)

Horizontal cablings are responsible for getting telecom resources to users at their workspaces or to other rooms on a floor.

Typically, a cable runs from the user’s device to the nearest telecommunications room on the same floor. The maximum allowed cable length between the user device and the telecommunication room is 295 feet. Horizontal cablings consist of cable connectors, patch panels, jumpers, and patch cords in the TE or TR.

The cables used in Horizontal cabling are-

  • Four-pair 100 ohm shielded twisted-pair cablings in Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat6a.
  • Multimode optical fiber cabling, two-fiber.
  • Single Mode optical fiber, two-faced fiber.

6. Work Area (WA)

This is the area from the connector in a wall outlet to the user device. In a structured cabling system, this is the final destination.

In simple words, a structured cabling system has made life easier. It is a future-proof investment, easy to use once installed, and cost-effective too.
